Pearl Jam's Backspacer

So a friend of mine told me to check out Pearl Jam's new album Backspacer. It was released September 20, 2009. I've gotta say, I love listening to early 90s alternative and classic rock...these are my two favorite genres but I just don't get that same feeling with Pearl Jam's new album. First of all, where did Eddie Vedder's tormented and dark Cher-like (yet way cooler) voice disappear to? I'm deeply saddened by the fact that some songs honestly don't even sound like Pearl Jam AT ALL. "Just Breath" reminds me of a southern rock song gone bad. The lyrics in the album are seriously just mediocre. I really hate saying this because I like Pearl Jam and I also like saying this because I think they can do better. This is why I find it hard to listen to bands/artists that I've loved for their past accomplishments. It's hard to put down on a group that was, at one point, fucking talented. You know what I'm talking about......Guns and Roses' Chinese Democracy, enough said. It was hard for me to finish listening to this album, it almost bored me to tears. I would have preferred watching paint dry. One song that somewhat sparked a nerve was "The Fixer," it's pretty catchy but really, it's also nothing special.

"When signals cross, I wanna put a little straight on it
If there's no love, I wanna try to love again"

So................the song is catchy and upbeat.....It almost sounds a bit pop rock but the lyrics blow!..."When the signals cross, I wanna put a little straight on it,"...or my personal favorite, "When something's bored I wanna put a little exciting on it"....What? I feel like Vedder was still suffering from writer's block when he wrote this one. As an English major, I can say that when you have writer's block, it's not a block at all because you still have to write something. You got a paper due at 9am the next day? You have 2 hours left. You will bullshit if you have to. Vedder turned in a bullshit paper.

Album Grade C-

Recommended Song of the day: Anna Begins By the Counting Crows... (an oldie but a goodie) :)
